In this article, I will analyze the West’s ontological fatigue, the ongoing political deadlock, institutional erosion, and the profound feeling of despair through the lens of the aforementioned report.

The Munich Security Report acts almost as a spiritual autopsy of Western civilization rather than a mere geopolitical situation assessment. This year’s report brings to the table a "state of despair" that is true to its title: "Under Destruction."

When you wander between the lines of the report, the picture that emerges appears not merely as a loss of military or economic power, but as an ontological fatigue, a deep sense of "Westlessness," and the image of a West eager to tear down the very temple it built with its own hands.

In short, the scene we are confronting points to a psychosis stemming from the failure of the civilization in question to fulfill its own promises, rather than a "loss of civilization." We observe the moments when the "liberal illusion" shatters and disperses, and a harsh, cold realism breaks down the walls and forces its way inside.

The ongoing Iran war taking place these days has also shown that the West has lost its capacity to adapt, and the "disintegration" debates that started within the framework of NATO seem to deepen the cracks that emerged in Munich.

The report clearly tells us that the order established after 1945 has entered a process of "destruction." Interestingly, the USA, which was once the patron and architect of the international liberal order, is now its chief "destroyer." Trump is more of a consequence than a cause at this point. He is almost the embodiment of the anger that has accumulated in the West.

According to the report, in many Western societies, political forces that prefer destruction over reform are gaining strength. In this emerging climate, those who use bulldozers and chainsaws are met with cautious admiration, even if they are not openly applauded for it.

As the report identifies, many mechanisms are deadlocked now. The most important and prominent among these is the concern that multilateral institutions constrain the USA.

Again, as we know very well from Trump, there is a belief that trade brings vulnerability, not peace. Trump is a deal-maker who reads trade solely through "sales."

The replacement of value-based politics with purely interest-oriented, transactional relationships is among the factors that worsen the situation.

In a sense, we are perhaps witnessing the West abandoning its claim to "universality." A power that has lost its ability to see its own values as universal now views those values as a burden.

A significant number of people in the West are caught in an irreversible declining trend. People have lost faith that dysfunctional and bureaucratized structures (like the UN and WTO) can be reformed. This opens the way for only one thing: destruction.

When we look at the issue from a sociological perspective, the most striking data in the report is the psychology of societies, rather than armament budgets.

The belief that "future generations will live worse," standing at 60% in France and 53% in the UK, indicates that the West's perception of time is distorted.

The myth of progress has now collapsed.

However, I am not sure if the fact that 80% of the people in China are hopeful about the future can be explained solely by economic growth.

This is almost concrete proof that the historical momentum, the "spirit of the times" (Zeitgeist), has shifted to the East.

There is also an important reference to China in the report: "Yet for some time now, China’s rise to superpower status has been eroding US preeminence in the Indo-Pacific. As Beijing sees it, China is reclaiming the position of de facto regional hegemon that it held for much of history. Many strategists are concerned that US forces could not defeat China – or only at an unacceptable cost – should the US intervene in a conflict in the region, for instance, over Taiwan."

Here, the sentence attributed to Napoleon, which The Economist carried on its cover last week with images of Trump and Xi, comes to mind: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake!"

While the West assumes a defensive and pessimistic posture, acting with the instinct of survival, the East seems to be rehearsing a return to its glorious days of yore.

This situation has created a profound sense of "despair" in Europe. Reaching 73% in France and Italy, this feeling can be interpreted as the bankruptcy of faith in the problem-solving capacity of politics.

According to the report, the phenomenon described by William Outhwaite and Oliver Nachtwey as “Zerstörungslust” (the mere desire to destroy) is becoming increasingly visible in postmodern societies.

The concept of "Westlessness," brought to the agenda in the previous conference, pointed to the disintegration of the West as an "idea." The ironic finding of the current report is that while China and India perceive the West as a "unified bloc," Westerners feel "fragmented."

Europe's situation is one of complete tragicomic loneliness.

The statement in the report that "the era in which Europe could unquestionably rely on the US as a security guarantor has ended" shows that an era has definitively ended.

After dreaming of the "end of history" for years, Europe must now wake up to great power competition.

German Chancellor Merz's outburst, "We cannot stand by and watch," can be read as an attempt to wake up from this slumber.

However, Europe's muscles (military capacity) are far from being able to carry this will (political rhetoric).

Although the 41% increase in defense budgets is a quantitative improvement, it is incapable of providing a qualitative "strategic autonomy."

Europe resembles an elderly aristocrat trying to survive by taking refuge in their values, squeezed between the US’s ‘politics of destruction “and China’s ‘hegemonic construction'.

The Munich Security Report tells us this: The world has now entered a phase governed by power, not rules—the era of the "Politics of Destruction."

The West is experiencing not only political but also profound psychological collapse.

However, a parenthesis must be opened. It is easy to declare a crisis in the West, but it would not be accurate to interpret this as an absolute collapse.

Europe still possesses massive economic capacity, institutional memory, technological infrastructure, and norm-producing potential.

Similarly, the US has not entirely lost its global roles. However, the main warning of the Munich report is quite different: the problem is not that the West's resources are exhausted, but rather the ambiguity of what political will and what sense of history these resources will be used with.

In other words, the issue is not a lack of power but rather the direction, purpose, and legitimacy of that power.

If we remain spectators in the face of this spreading "bulldozer politics," those valued "rules and institutions" will soon turn into a pile of rubble in a short time.

Perhaps the real importance of the Munich Report lies in this.

The report records a state of mind before security and civilizational fatigue before strategy.

Amidst this dust and smoke, we will be debating/fighting not over what the new world will look like, but how we can clear away the wreckage of the old world.
